Private Sector’s Contribution Towards Excellence in Education

Young minds are India’s most prized and valued assets and CII believes that both government and private sector institutions must frequently share best practices, find newer ways to shape young impressionable minds and improve learning outcomes. As an effort to uphold this goal and to cement its leadership position in policy advocacy in human resource development and education, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in partnership with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD),organiseda mega two-day Education Summit covering both school and higher education on 4-5 October at the Auditorium, AICTE Headquarters, Nelson Mandela Marg, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. The summit was also supported by National Institute of Open Schooling, The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and UNESCO-Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP).

Day-one of the Education Summit that focussed on School Education, saw a rich inaugural session with Mr Sunil Kant Munjal, Chairman, CII Education Council &Chairman, Hero Enterprise; Dr B V R Mohan Reddy, Co-Chairman, CII Education Council & Executive Chairman, Cyient; Dr Shayama Chona, Educationist & President, Tamanna Association; Mr Biswajit Kumar Singh, Commissioner, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti; Prof. Chandra Bhushan Sharma, Chairman, The National Institute of Open Schooling and Prof Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, All India Council for Technical Education as speakers. Mr Mujal remarked that changes due to technology, communication systems, cloud computing are changing the pace of education system. He also emphasised the need to build an education system that focuses on values as ethics and integrity are key issues being faced by the young generation.Mr Biswajit Kumar Singh said that the challenges in education system are quality infrastructure, quality teacher and quality education. He suggested that education from class I-XII should be taken in an integrated and holistic way. Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe recommended that teaching of concepts should be in an integrated and hands-on manner.

The sessions on day one focussed on topics such as effective policy for quality outcomes; expectationsofstudents and their views on how different types of pedagogy, assessments, technology and life skills affect them; holistic education and child safety; digital pedagogies for 21st century skills and how much students are actually learning. Corporate schools case studies of Bharati Foundation and Shiv Nadar Schools were also presented as role models to be emulated. Apart from these, a workshop on ‘Innovation in Teaching Delivery’ for teachers and counselling session for students were organised parallely, which were widely appreciated.

The second day of the Education Summit saw 10 institutes winning the AICTE-CII Survey awards for 2018.
The 7th edition of the report on AICTE-CII Survey was also released on the occasion.

Congratulating the winners on their exceptional work with industry, Secretary, Higher Education, Mr R Subrahmanyam said, “Winners of the survey deserve all the applause they got.” Mr Subrahmanyam was the chief guest in the opening session and he spoke at length about government initiatives to promote excellence in higher education. Minister for HRD, Mr Prakash Javadekar, sent a video message at the summit. He appreciated the efforts of AICTE and CII in mapping the industry linkages of technical institutes and promised to encourage premier institutions such as IITs, NITs and IIMs to participate in it in future.

Chairman, AICTE, Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe, who joined the Secretary in giving away the awards to winners of the Survey, said that the work done by these institutes was an example for others. Additional Secretary, University Grants Commission (UGC), Dr Pankaj Mittal spoke about the “Changing Role of Regulators”.

Industry stalwarts who were present on this occasion included Mr Sunil Kant Munjal. As the Chairman of CII Education Council this year, Chairman of Hero Enterprise and as the promoter of BML Munjal University, Mr Munjal has been working actively in the area of education. He is also the Chairman of Doon School and Dayanand Medical College. Speaking on this occasion on “Creating New-age Institutions”, he emphasized that new-age institutions will have to handle the changes which are becoming a reality because of technology. Dr BVR Mohan Reddy, who is the Chairman of IIT Hyderabad in addition to being the Chairman of CII Education Council and Chairman of Cyient, highlighted the role of technology and the disruptions that it is bringing and how it will impact the way learning was happening.

A session on ‘Latest Trends in Higher Education & Industry-Academia Partnerships’ discussed the need for industry and academia to work together as cogs of a wheel. The session was chaired by Dr B V R Mohan Reddy. The session focussing on ‘Policy To Drive Excellence’ was chaired by Prof. Pankaj Jalote Former Director, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi and the panelists were Prof Y.S. Rajan, Distinguished Professor, ISRO; Dr Prahlada Ramarao, Former Director, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology; Prof Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur; Mr Akshay Munjal, President, BML Munjal University and Ms Shilpa Gupta, Vice-President (Public Policy) & Head – Corporate Communication, Bharti Enterprises Ltd.

Case studies of Amity University by Dr Atul Chauhan, Chancellor, Amity Universityand that of BML Munjal University by Dr Vishal Talwar, Dean, School of Management, BML Munjal University were also presented to highlight the best practices in the field of higher education.

The Education Summit comprised of esteemed education and industry leaders as speakers and was attended by numerous stakeholders in the education sector from all over the country.

AICTE-CII Survey Awards for Industry-linked Technical Institutes 2018

Total 10 awards were given in nine categories, which included 9 degree-level and 1 diploma level awards. In the degree category, there were six awards in engineering, one in management and two in pharmaceutical category. The management award was won for the second consecutive year by the New Delhi Institute of Management.

Degree institutes, more than 10 years old, which were winners of engineering awards were Vivekanand Education Society's College of Pharmacy which won the first award sponsored by Cadila Pharmaceutical in pharma category; the second award in this category, also sponsored by Cadila Pharmaceuticals, was won by the Bombay College of Pharmacy which has been a three times winner of this award in the past.

First prize in mechanical engineering was won by the College of Engineering Pune which has won this award seven times in the survey since its inception in 2012. Sona College of Technology won the second prize in mechanical engineering and also one for chemical engineering. Sri Sai Ram Engineering College won the award for electrical engineering while it had won for computer & IT engineering last year. Walchand Engineering College won the civil engineering award while the New Delhi Institute of Management won the management award for the second time in a row.

Among diploma institutes, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College was yet again the lone winner and it won the award for mechanical engineering this time while last year it was for chemical engineering.

Basic data from more than 9500 technical institutes,who were required to complete a Short Survey before being able to download their approval letters from the AICTE web portal, formed the basis of the AICTE – CII Survey and from which more than 3500 institutes were invited to participate in the Full Survey. Total 755 entries were received in the Full Survey.

Initiated in 2012 by CII and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the IndPact Survey is an objective source of information with the core being the industry – academia collaboration that exists.
